Apologies for the delay

In reality, it is about 5:45 p.m. eastern, and I just got back online. I will be posting everything I've missed so far from Friday on, in order, starting now, and ending with Frank Rich, as is my Sunday custom.

Since I have occasion to speak, I am turning the comments on and asking a question...

Since the pay wall is coming down and the site as it currently exists will not be necessary, should I continue to post, probably using the expandable post format, and have a comment thread for discussion? The Washington Post offers that on their website, but the Times doesn't. Since nearly a thousand people a day currently read this site, we should get some decent commentary.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I found this site only in the past few days. I appreciate your doing this for a bunch of strangers. As far as the comments idea: would it be worth your time? There are comments sections at all the blogs and most news sites these days. I used to post some thoughts but now realize it is truly a waste of time. Trolls, flaming, sock puppets-comments sections seem to be more a means of venting than discussion.

Comments sections come in one of three types. They are either inside baseball (fdl), flaming lunacy (think progress), or decent discourse (political animal) - I like discourse. I also like discussing the op-ed pages of the times. I would probably comment from time to time, and would like to see the site continue, if for no other reason than sentimentality. (Are yu or were you ever a punk rocker? I like your DIY spirit. And the dedication to reproducing the posts so thoroughly and exactly. I have Times Select, followed a link here from Think Progress, and pretty much always read Times Select here now.)

  3. I don't believe a word Murdoch's NY Post prints: if it says the weather is sunny outside I'll always check for myself -- and even then remain skeptical and pack my umbrella.

So let's wait and see if the TimesSelect firewall coming down is more than unsubstantiated rumor mongering from a Guiliani supporting rag.

If someone were to continue publishing an excellent page like the one you put up every day I'd still be much more likely to read it then let the Times collect my cookies for their advertising dollars.

Thanks for all the work you put into this page every day!

  5. I prefer reading without ads. I have emailed the NYT twice suggesting that they follow Salon's lead: if you don't subscribe, you see ads; if you do, they're gone. I resisted paying for Times Select if I couldn't get that deal. If they take the Salon route, I'll probably pay -- and this site won't be needed. But if the ads continue, I would much prefer to read here.
